2026-06-25 Food Rules for a Healthy Life

Sorry I’m posting this so late. My computer crashed this afternoon. I’m busy tonight (Thursday June 25) trying to recover about two month’s of work from backups. Here are the materials for the June 26 lesson.

Food Rules for a Healthy Life

Most of us have a small set of food rules we try to follow. Finish your vegetables. Don’t snack after dinner. Treat yourself once a week. The rules are simple, but talking about them in English is a different skill — and one that comes up in real life, whether you’re explaining a diet to a doctor, sharing a recipe with a friend abroad, or simply answering a question at a dinner party.

This Friday’s lesson is built around that exact skill. We’ll talk about the food rules we live by, share stories about the ones we follow and the ones we break, and practice five phrases that show up in nearly every conversation about food and health: cut back on, crave, comfort food, sweet tooth, watch what you eat. We’ll also have a special guest — Shani Chang, a student from Rice University in Texas — joining us, so the cross-cultural dimension will surface naturally through her answers.

A short decision-making game opens the lesson, then a mingle where you find classmates with food rules similar to (or different from) yours. After that, you’ll get a chance to ask our guest about food and eating in her daily life. We close with a small-group defense of the one rule you would never break.

Special thanks to Miyuki-san, whose standing topic request inspired this lesson. We hope to see you Friday morning with your stories ready.

Five key phrases to listen for:

  • cut back on (something) — to eat or use less of it
  • crave (something) — to want it very strongly
  • comfort food — a food that makes you feel safe or happy
  • a sweet tooth — a tendency to love sweet things
  • watch what you eat — to be careful about what you eat

具体的には cut back on、crave、comfort food、sweet tooth、watch what you eat という表現を学びます。

  • cut back on(〜を控える)
  • crave(〜をとても欲しがる)
  • comfort food(懐かしい気持ちにさせてくれる食べ物)
  • a sweet tooth(甘いもの好き)
  • watch what you eat(食事に気をつける)

Most of the English we actually use on a trip isn’t about emergencies — it’s the small, ordinary transactions. Ordering a coffee. Asking if something comes in another color. Paying at the counter without freezing up. In Friday’s lesson we’ll practice the natural versions of these moments — the ones a native speaker uses without thinking — and run them until they feel ordinary for us too.

    旅先で実際に使う英語の大半は、緊急事態のための表現ではありません。コーヒーを一杯注文する、別の色はありますかと尋ねる、レジで慌てずに支払いを済ませる。そうした何ということもないやりとりこそが、旅先で使う英語のほとんどを占めています。金曜日のレッスンでは、こうした場面で現地の人が意識せずに使っている自然な言い回しを取り上げ、私たちにとっても当たり前になるまで、繰り返し声に出して練習します。
